How Does the Malta Salary Calculator Work?

Enter your gross salary, choose a weekly, monthly or annual pay period, and select your tax year and the tax status on your FS4 form. The Malta salary calculator for 2026 and 2027 estimates your take-home pay and shows income tax, National Insurance and employer costs separately.

Gross Salary vs Net Salary in Malta

Gross salary is your pay before deductions. Net salary is the amount left after income tax and your employee National Insurance contribution. To compare gross to net pay in Malta, use the same pay period for both figures. Monthly and weekly results are annual averages, so individual payslips may vary.

Income Tax Deductions

Your employer deducts income tax through the Final Settlement System (FSS). The amount depends on your annual taxable income and tax status. This Malta tax calculator uses resident rates and includes the optional low-income employment relief for eligible single-rate employees earning up to €12,445 in 2026.

National Insurance Contributions

National Insurance (NI), also called social security, is calculated on basic weekly pay, excluding statutory bonuses. Under the 2026 schedule, the standard employee rate is 10%, capped at €55.93 a week for people born from 1962, or €49.04 for those born earlier. Different rules apply to low earnings and eligible students. The calculator uses 52 contribution weeks and retains the 2026 NI schedule for 2027 estimates until the new schedule is published. Employer contributions are an additional business cost and do not reduce your net pay.

Statutory Bonuses and Allowances

Full-time employees receive two statutory bonuses of €135.10, paid in June and December, and two allowances of €121.16, paid in March and September. Together these total €512.52 a year before tax. The calculator prorates this amount for part-time hours. Under More options, choose Add to salary if these payments are extra, or Already included if your gross figure covers them.

Malta Salary Calculator 2027: What Changes?

The published 2027 family tax bands increase the tax-free allowance for eligible married couples and parents with qualifying children. Choose 2027 above to compare your income tax and take-home pay. The tax year means the year you earn the income.

2027 Cost-of-Living Increase (COLA)

Select Apply 2027 COLA increase (full-time) to add €6.41 a week, or €333.32 over a full year, to your gross salary before tax and National Insurance. This option assumes full-time work. Leave it unchecked if your salary already includes the increase. Part-time employees receive a proportionate amount; this option applies the full-time amount.

Standard single, married and parent bands remain unchanged. Family-rate eligibility still matters; use the status that applies to you.

The calculator uses the published 2027 income tax bands, the current statutory bonus amounts and the employment relief rules in force. National Insurance is estimated using 2026 contribution limits; 2027 limits have not yet been independently verified.
